Benefits Counseling
The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area is in need of caring volunteers to serve the Benefits Counseling Program. No prior experience is required. Volunteer Benefits Counselors are responsible for providing information, counseling and assistance to older persons on topics such as public and private health benefits, individual rights, legal issues, and consumer fraud. Volunteers work in conjunction with the staff Benefits Counselor at the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area. All residents age 60 or older, as well as those who are Medicare eligible regardless of age, in the ten counties served by the Agency are eligible to receive benefits counseling services.
Volunteer Benefits Counselors help the Texas State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to educate, counsel, and assist Medicare beneficiaries.
Please note: Insurance agents, insurance brokers, and financial planners are not eligible to serve as SHIP volunteers.
Health, Prevention and Wellness
The Health Prevention and Wellness Program has a Lifespan Respite Care volunteer opportunity to provide respite for caregivers of individuals with chronic conditions. Our mission is to provide respite in the family home in order to support the health and well-being of the caregiver. Respite allows the caregiver to rest and take care of everyday needs. Training is provided and we will work to make the best possible match. There are opportunities available in all ten counties of the AAACAP service area.
Long Term Care Ombudsman
The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program needs volunteers who can visit local area Nursing and Assisted Living Facilities as Volunteer Ombudsman. Our goal is to help provide the best possible quality of life for residents. Certification training is provided through the Ombudsman Program. Volunteers work under the direction of the Regional Ombudsman and have all the resources of the Ombudsman office for support. We make a difference one resident at a time.
