CAPCOG holds threat identification, evacuation workshops

Thursday, August 22, 2019

The CAPCOG Homeland Security Division will host three courses in September to train peace officers, emergency managers and other local government officials about identifying potential acts of terrorism and preparing to evacuate communities during large scale natural and man-made disasters. All courses will be held at CAPCOG, 6800 Burleson Road, Building 310 Suite 165, in Austin.

“Joint training classes for CAPCOG area jurisdictions provide best practice educational opportunities that also promote increased collaboration between public safety agencies,” said Martin Ritchey, CAPCOG Homeland Security director.

The first two courses train Threat Liaison Officers to work with the Austin Regional Intelligence Center, a multi-jurisdictional policing partnership that exchanges information and intelligence to maximize resources, streamline operations, and improve the ability to fight crime and terrorism across the 10-county, CAPCOG region. Each course will educate its participants on their key roles for effectively identifying and sharing information that could deter terrorism and multi-jurisdictional crimes. A Tuesday, Sept. 3 course is for those who play active role in public safety but are not peace officers, while a Thursday, Sept. 5 course is for peace officers.

On Monday, Sept. 9, CAPCOG will hold an Evacuation Planning Strategies and Solutions course. Emergency managers, first responders, transportation professionals, and other public safety officials will learn best practices for planning and executing an emergency evacuation. The course also discusses appropriate protective actions against possible hazardous conditions during an emergency evacuation and explores data, modelling tools, and simulations that can assist with implementing an evacuation.
