Connected Nation: Rural Broadband Meeting

Connected Nation, a nationwide nonprofit that helps expand broadband Internet, is bringing together state, federal and local leaders to discuss issues related to broadband infrastructure development and broadband adoption rates in rural communities.

This meeting and several others being conducted around the state are to help garner feedback about access to programs that support the development of infrastructure and provide rural residents with higher Internet connection speeds. The feedback will be used to help foundations better target such programs. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Texas Department of Agriculture and Central Texas Library Systems will attend.

All local officials interested in the topic are welcome.

Professional Care Managers’ Training: Honoring the Mission

The Area Agency on Aging is hosting a professional care managers’ training, Honoring the Mission: Counseling to Promote Positive Caregiving. The session will bring two national speakers to discuss issues related to long-term care for patients and their effects on the professional care managers.

Clinical psychologists, Dr. Barry J. Jacobs, Psy.D. and Dr. Julia L. Mayer, Psy.D., will speak on topics covered in their book AARP Meditations for Caregivers—Practical, Emotional and Spiritual Support for You and Your Family.

This is a seminar for professionals serving to help family caregivers. Free social work CEUs are available.

Homeland Security Training: Disaster Debris Management Planning

CAPCOG is hosting a workshop on Planning for Disaster Debris Management to help prepare communities for mitigating trash and rubble caused by natural and man-made incidents.

Attendees will learn debris management components and best practices by using existing plan examples and case studies giving them the materials and skills needed to effectively and efficiently plan for debris management. Proper pre-planning for disaster debris protects critical infrastructure, minimizes health and safety risks, and assists with efficiently restoring a community to its pre-disaster state.

While designed for emergency managers, this workshop benefits a variety of groups to include law enforcement personnel, government administrators, city planners, firefighters, hazardous materials teams, public works personnel, and community and residential volunteers. 

The Registration Deadline is Aug. 28.
