The CAPCOG Emergency Communications Division is offering its first, in-person 80-hour Basic Telecommunicator Licensing Course throughout August and is scheduling two additional courses to be completed before the end of the year. Covering 10 telecommunicator topics the course prepares telecommunicators for numerous situations about advancing their career as the first, first responder and helping to save lives.
“CAPCOG is offering this course in-person to provide more training expertise and give each student the attention they need to succeed, not just in passing the final TCOLE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement) exam but in serving their community as an emergency telecommunicator,” said Pamela Frisk, CAPCOG 9-1-1 senior training and public education specialist, noting several places offer it online. “Being an emergency telecommunicator is a profession not just a job, and our students will learn that.”
As mandated by the state, the course covers topics such as basic radio communications; legal and liability concepts; communication resources and confidentiality; emergency communications technology; crisis communications; stress, health, and awareness; as well as other topics. The CAPCOG course will span four weeks to accommodate emergency communication centers and instructors’ schedules and include a study day before the exam. CAPCOG’s previous 40-hour basic telecommunicator licensing course had a 98 percent pass rate. While the August course is full, future courses will be posted at training.capcog.org.
