The CAPCOG General Assembly will elect the 2021 Executive Committee at its annual membership meeting on Dec. 9, 2020 based on a slate of elected officials recommended by CAPCOG’s Nominating Committee selected at its September meeting. The Executive Committee consists of local elected officials from around the region and up to four state legislators; it meets monthly to provide direction to CAPCOG staff on program implementation, budgets, contracts and general policies and procedures for managing the agency.
Each year, a Nominating Committee proposes a slate to the General Assembly from a pool of self-nominated elected officials from every county, from cities with various populations, and from state legislators whose districts represent a portion of the CAPCOG region. This year’s slate retains many of the 2020 Executive Committee members; however, proposed newcomers include Commissioner-elect Ann Howard to fill a Travis County position; Georgetown Mayor Pro Tem Kevin Pitts to fill a position representing cities with a population between 25,000 and 100,000, and State Representative Erin Zwiener who represents Blanco and Hays counties. The Lee County position is currently vacant as no self-nominations have been presented to CAPCOG since Lee County Commissioner Maurice Pitts, CAPCOG’s longest-serving Executive Committee member, was not re-elected in November. Also of note, two recommendations may be impacted by run-off elections — Austin City Council Member Jimmy Flannigan and San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson. If either does not win their election, CAPCOG will conduct another General Assembly meeting in January to fill those Executive Committee positions.
