The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is conducting an informal comment period on the 24 councils’ of governments 2022-44 Regional Solid Waste Management Plans including CAPCOG’s plan. The comment period will be open from Aug. 19, 2022 to Sept. 20, 2022 before the plans will reviewed and adopted by TCEQ commissioner via a rule amendment which could take 12 months.
Information about submitting comments will be available at www.tceq.texas.gov/goto/wastegrant along with all 24 draft plans.
CAPCOG’s plan was developed with input from regional stakeholders to include its own public comment period. The 22-year plan provides direction to CAPCOG on how to allocate solid waste grant funding, handle solid waste facility conformance reviews, and ensure the region doesn’t reach landfill capacity. It identifies the region’s needs and implementation of other plans to increase solid waste diversion, extending the longevity of landfills, and increase recycling, reuse and reduction rates. The 2022-44 plan’s current draft contains 15 goals and objectives that stakeholders helped prioritize.
CAPCOG’s current solid waste management plan will be considered active until the new plans are adopted by the commission. This may impact grant projects selection while waiting for the new plans to become active.
