CAPCOG recommends criminal justice grants

The CAPCOG Executive Committee prioritized and recommended 48 criminal justice projects to the Office of the Governor’s (OOG) Public Safety Office for funding from five state funding opportunities in mid-May; the recommendations are seeking about $11.9 million while the state provided the CAPCOG area with a reasonable budget estimate (RBE) of $9.5 million. The OOG is anticipated to announce project awards in the fall of 2024.

“CAPCOG’s prioritization process sought to stretch the funding opportunities to as many projects as possible while highlighting the region’s priorities,” said Charles Simon, CAPCOG Regional Planning and Services director. “Our hope is that more money will become available to the region and that every viable project will receive some funding.”

Each project application was reviewed, scored and given a priority ranking by CAPCOG’s Criminal Justice Advisory Committee (CJAC) based on the region’s Criminal Justice Plan Year 2025 Scoring Criteria which was established with stakeholder’s input. The CJAC also heard presentations from applicants to determine their scores. The CAPCOG Executive Committee then finalized the prioritization recommendations to be sent to the OOG.

For the Plan Year 2025, the Criminal Justice Assistance and the General Victims Assistance Direct Services programs received the most applications in the region, 38 between them.
