CAPCOG recommends $12.7 million in Criminal Justice projects to OOG

CAPCOG reviewed 59 project applications and submitted it recommended prioritization list for four five Office of the Governor (OOG) criminal justice funding opportunities. The submitted projects applications were seeking about $16.2 million while CAPCOG’s recommendations sought about $12.7 million, which is $2.3 million greater than the region’s reasonable budget estimate of $10.4 million.

“Every year CAPCOG wants to fund as many projects as possible that meet the region’s funding priorities and maximize the funding coming to the region,” said Karina Trevino, CAPCOG community development coordinator. Ultimately, CAPCOG’s recommendation is to fund nearly all the projects submitted and hope the region receives a larger allocation than initially presented.

In this year’s review process, CAPCOG allowed digital submissions of project summary sheets to ease the application process and increase the information the CAPCOG Criminal Justice Advisory Committee (CJAC) received about each project. The CJAC reviewed, scored and ranked the projects before the CAPCOG Executive Committee set the region’s prioritization. Scoring and ranking were also done digitally, which allowed the committee more time to discuss each project.

CAPCOG anticipates the OOG, which makes the final funding determination, will announce grant recipients in August.
