40 Hour Basic Telecommunicator

The Basic Telecommunicator Licensing Course is designed to provide the beginning telecommunicator with an understanding of situations encountered in an emergency communications environment. This course is required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within the first year of hire for licensing as a basic emergency telecommunicator. The course content will include radio dispatching, call taking, call classification, emergency and non-emergency situations, liability and legal issues, and stress management.

Please note - Students will automatically be scheduled to take the TCOLE licensing exam as a group the Monday after the last day of class. The exam costs $25, and that is payable directly to TCOLE in the form of agency check, money order, or cash in exact change on the day of the exam. They will be accompanied by the instructor to facilitate the sharing of scoring information. Since they must take the exam immediately following the class, they must have passed #1305 TCOLE Rules Overview prior to the start of this class. Additionally, if a student fails more than 1 of the daily quizzes, they will be asked to leave and retake the class at another time.

Dress Code: To promote a professional training environment, CAPCOG requires proper professional attire. T-shirts, shorts, capri pants, leggings, and flip-flops are prohibited.

Entry to the building: Come in through the Capital Area Council of Governments Training Center entrance (under metal awning – this door is unlocked) and then take the second door on the right. 

Attendee must bring their PID # to receive TCOLE credit for courses taken at CAPCOG. No meals provided with this training. CAPCOG provides training for the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) in our region at no cost to 9-1-1 telecommunicators and their departments. When space is reserved for a 9-1-1 training class offered by CAPCOG, students, or the supervisor who made the reservation, must cancel such reservation at least two business days prior to start of the class or payment for the class will be invoiced to the appropriate agency for the "no show".

When space allows, we can open the class up for outside agencies to attend for a fee. Non-member agencies may contact Veronica Neal at 512-916-6097 for pricing inquiries.

Cancel Registration

CAPCOG reserves the right to cancel a class that does not meet the minimum number of registered attendees at least seven business days before the class start date. In those circumstances, CAPCOG will provide a full refund. Students who wish to cancel their registration must cancel online or notify CAPCOG in writing (via email or fax) at least seven business days prior to the course date in order to receive a refund. There will be a $10 administrative fee for processing the refund.

"No shows" and student cancellations made less than seven business days prior to the start of class may be charged the full course fee. Partial attendance will not be permitted for any of the courses.
