National Incident Based Reporting System Workshop

The Texas Department of Public Safety will lead a workshop about law enforcement agencies throughout the state switching from the FBI’s Summary Reporting System (SRS) to the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). While SRS provides an aggregate monthly tally of crimes, NIBRS provides circumstances and context for crimes. Its reporting includes all offenses within a single incident and additional aspects about each event, such as location, time of day, and whether the incident was cleared.

This workshop will educate law enforcement agencies about NIBRS but also will discuss how local governments can apply for grant funds to switch to the system. The state allocated $16.2 million to assist agencies in switching from SRS to NIBRS and help the State achieve its goal of having all its agencies switch before September 2019. A second grant application round should begin in mid- to late-November and close in mid- to late-January. The state awarded $1.8 million in grants during the first round.
