This course provides the key concepts, safety techniques and communication skills for peace officers to use when they respond to individuals in a serious mental health crisis. It covers the legal aspects of mental health commitments, liability issues, mental disorders, and mental disabilities. In addition, it deals with a variety of developmental disabilities including epilepsy, cerebral palsy and hearing impairments. Other areas covered include:
- indicators of mental illness
- understanding mental illness
- documenting the interpersonal relations necessary to effectively work with the mentally ill, their families, and the mental health system
- intervention strategies for dealing with low and high risk situations
The former 16-hour Crisis Intervention Training ceased to exist on April 1, 2018. For officers licensed after April 1, 2018, who have not had this new Crisis Intervention Training as part of their BPOC, this is a required course and must be taken within two years of license issuance. For officers who were licensed before April 1, 2018, this is a required course to be completed no later than the second anniversary of the date the officer is licensed or the date an officer applies for an intermediate proficiency certificate, whichever date is earlier. This course is also part of the required curriculum to qualify for the Mental Health Officer Certification.
This course can be purchased as a combination package with De-Escalation Course on March 10,2025, and the Mental Health Officer Course from March 11 to 13, 2025. All together the discounted price is $600 to enroll in the three courses. Seating however is limited for the joint enrollment because of the class size restrictions. Attendee must bring their PID # to receive TCOLE credit for courses affiliated with CAPCOG. To promote a professional environment, CAPCOG requires proper business casual attire. T-shirts, shorts, capri pants, and flip-flops are prohibited. No meals provided with training.
