The purpose of this course is to educate law enforcement officers about issues pertaining to serving as a mental health officer.

The course covers the legal aspects of mental health commitments, liability issues, mental disorders, and mental disabilities. In addition, it deals with a variety of developmental disabilities including epilepsy, cerebral palsy and hearing impairments. Other areas covered include:

  • indicators of mental illness;
  • understanding mental illness;
  • documenting the interpersonal relations necessary to effectively work with the mentally ill, their families, and the mental health system; and
  • intervention strategies for dealing with both low and high-risk situations.

This course will serve as part of the standards necessary for certification as a mental health officer by TCOLE.

This course can be purchased as a combination package with Crisis Intervention Training from Feb. 10 to 14, 2025, and the De-Escalation Course on March 10, 2025. All together the discounted price is $600 to enroll in the three courses. Seating however is limited for the joint enrollment because of the class size restrictions. All courses are being taught at Lee County Sheriff’s office, 2122 FM 448, Giddings, TX 78942.

Special Instructions

Attendees must bring their PID # to receive TCOLE credit for courses affiliated with CAPCOG.  To promote a professional environment, CAPCOG requires proper business casual attire. T-shirts, shorts, capri pants, and flip-flops are prohibited. No meals provided with training.
