The CAPCOG Homeland Security Division released a new Warn Central Texas Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document ahead of National Preparedness Month, September, to encourage residents to register themselves and their families in the regional notification system for local emergency alerts. The FAQ explains when and how Warn Central Texas is used, how residents can enroll and update their information, and how the system works.
“The most important thing people should know about Warn Central Texas is, we can’t notify you if we don’t know about you,” said Matt Zimmerman, CAPCOG crisis information systems coordinator. “CAPCOG uses several methods to gather the data for the 2.2 million contacts in the system, but the best way to ensure you receive emergency alerts is to create a profile yourself.” The FAQ seeks to help people understand the system and the importance of self-registering.
The Warn Central Texas FAQ will be one of the items available to communities to promote emergency preparedness during September. CAPCOG also will conduct a social media campaign with shareable graphics and messaging. The CAPCOG Executive Committee is scheduled to proclaim September as National Preparedness Month during its August meeting.
