Firearms Instructor – TCOLE 2222
This professional skill development course is for peace officers who want a TCOLE Firearms Instructor Certificate. The Firearms Instructor’s Course is a weeklong, 40-hour class designed to cover handgun, shotgun and patrol rifles.
The course starts with three qualification courses that must be passed with advanced proficiency. Enrolled peace officers will receive lectures on the theory of instructing and practicing range safety and management, course design and liability issues. There are several classroom presentations and lectures throughout the week. Enrolled officers also will teach a live course of fire demonstration to their peers.

Student Prerequisites:
- Not prohibited by state or federal law or rule from attending training related to firearms or from possessing a firearm.
- Never had a license or certificate issued by the Commission suspended or revoked.
- Currently hold an Instructor Certificate of Proficiency issued by the Commission.
- Currently employed or designated by the agency chief administrator or academy coordinator as a firearms instructor.
- Have at least three years’ experience as either a law enforcement officer or a firearms instructor.
Required Equipment
- Hearing protection
- Wrap around eye protection
- Billed cap
- Semi-automatic pistol with three magazines
- Duty belt, flashlight, magazine holder, speed loader pouch and appropriate holsters for the revolver and semi-automatic pistol
- Factory loaded ammunition, 500 rounds for semi-automatic pistol
- 12 gauge police shotgun with ammunition (50 rounds birdshot, 25 rounds 00 buck and 10 rounds of rifled slug)
- Durable clothes for outdoor range activities including foul weather
- Gun cleaning supplies appropriate for their weapons
Physical Requirements
- Participants must pass the Firearms Instructor Qualification Course on the first day of class. This can be found in the appendix B of the TCOLE abstract which can be downloaded from the TCOLE Website. Students should download and have the abstract available during class as a reference.
