TxCDBG funds improve Lexington’s historic downtown

Lexington has completed sidewalk improvements that enhanced accessibility and safety in its historic downtown with the aid of a $335,300 Downtown Revitalization Program grant from Texas Department of Agriculture’s (TDA’s) Community Development Block Grant (TxCDBG) program.

The project reconstructed approximately 782 feet of sidewalks, installed a thousand feet of curb and gutter, and added four storm drain inlets to improve drainage. Accessibility was significantly improved with the installation of 17 ADA-compliant ramps and a crosswalk, ensuring downtown Lexington is more navigable for residents. Asphalt pavement repairs and other associated improvements were also completed.

The TxCDBG program, which aims to develop viable communities by improving housing, living environments, and economic opportunities for low- to moderate-income individuals, played a crucial role in revitalizing the area. The improvements made downtown Lexington safer, more accessible, and more welcoming to residents and visitors.

TDA’s Downtown Revitalization Program, Community Development Fund, and other initiatives offer funding opportunities to local non-entitlement communities, with maximum awards ranging from $500,000 to $1,000,000. While the application deadline for the Downtown Revitalization Program is still to be determined, the deadline for the 2025-2026 Community Development Fun — the largest funding category — is Dec. 1st, 2024. CAPCOG is available to provide technical assistance and help communities within the 10-county region identify eligible projects for these funding opportunities.
