CAPCOG offers 9-1-1 telecommunicators pandemic training

CAPCOG’s Emergency Communications Division conducted its first pandemic specific course for emergency telecommunicators in early December and a second will follow in January. The live virtual courses aim to further aid the region’s first responders in enduring through crises that affect the region’s public safety answering points.

“It is important that emergency telecommunicators get up-to-date training based on current events to best serve their communities,” said Veronica Neal, CAPCOG 9-1-1 senior training specialist. While these courses may be specific to the pandemic; the skills, strategies and techniques learned during them can be used in any ongoing crisis and in daily operations.

The first course, Pandemic Stress Relief and Communications, taught telecommunicators how to reduce their own pandemic related stress and mitigate organizational stress factors so such factors don’t impede emergency response. The Supervising during a Pandemic course is scheduled for January 8. Attendees will assess their leadership traits while learning about the foundations of managing during a crisis and how to build long-term team resiliency. The course will teach conflict resolution and operational supervision techniques.
