CAPCOG is encouraging local jurisdiction to recognize the unsung work family caregivers provide to their love ones during National Caregivers Month — November. Through the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP), CAPCOG works with family caregivers to improve the wellbeing of the older adults for which they care. Year-round it provides caregivers respite care and mental wellness and self-care training. AAACAP also offers educational events such as an annual Striking a Balance: Family Caregiver Conference and its Hands-on Skills Workshop for Family Caregivers.
“Every year we look forward to honoring the efforts of the family caregivers across our region who tirelessly provide care for loved ones in addition to their other responsibilities,” said Patty Bordie, AAACAP director. There is about 3.4 million family caregiver in the state and about 53 million family caregivers nationally, providing $470 billion in unpaid care, 61 percent work at least one fulltime job while providing an average of 23.7 hours a week of care. “These long hours mean it is essential to encourage caregivers to use respite and maintain their self-care, so they can reduce stress, recharge and continue providing quality care to their love ones,” Bordie added.
The CAPCOG Executive Committee proclaimed November as National Caregiver’s month during its October meeting.
