CAPCOG and its Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP) are seeking to contribute more than $375,000 to community partners working to increase COVID-19 vaccinations rates among older adults — those 60 years old or older — or their caregivers in the ten-county region.
“Organizations in the region have been successful in getting older adults vaccinated as they are among the highest demographic to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the region,” said Patty Bordie, AAACAP director. “But there still remains a significant number of older adults at a higher risk for catching the virus. We want to make sure everyone who wants the vaccine has access to it.” According to Texas Health and Human Services, more than 61 percent of older adults have been fully vaccinated in all ten counties. Some counties have achieved a more than 80 percent vaccination rate for their older population.
CAPCOG has received funds through the U.S. Health and Human Services via the Centers of Disease Control and the Administration on Community Living efforts to increase COVID-19 vaccination awareness and education as well as access to getting vaccinated. This money can go to local awareness campaigns, help pay for transportation to vaccination sites, support paying for pop-up vaccination clinics, and possibly other creative activities if they involve older adults or their family caregivers. Community partners to include local governments, hospitals, and health advocacy groups working in the vaccination arena should contact Bordie to discuss this opportunity.
