The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP), a CAPCOG division, is conducting two webinars to assist older adults and their caregivers with estate planning measures that can improve access to long-term care benefits. The webinars will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. April 27 and May 18; after which, older adults or their caregivers can seek additional estate planning consultation with local attorneys.
“These webinars will provide information about low cost methods to protect people’s property and finances, so they can obtain access to long-term care when needed,” said Alice Navarro, AAACAP benefits counselor. According to the region’s Aging Area Plan, many older adults don’t make use of proper estate planning which can limit access to benefits for fear of losing their home or other valuable possessions. These webinars “hopefully will serve as people’s first steps in getting their affairs in order, so they better age in place with the proper care,” Navarro said.
The Austin-based Texas Legal Services Center will lead the webinar and discuss estate planning topics such as the Medicaid Estate Recovery Program, durable power of attorney, medical power of attorney and affidavit of heirship. AAACAP will then coordinate with families who want to seek legal services.
