CAPCOG’s Solid Waste program will host a 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training from July 12 to 16 at the Burnet Agrilife Building, 607 North Vanderveer Street in Burnet. The training will let local jurisdictions throughout the region operate household hazardous waste permanent facilities in a safe and responsible manner.
The training course is mandated for anyone who will be removing hazardous waste from vehicles, but the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality also requires that its participants be full-time solid waste employees. Participants of the course will learn about chemical identification; safety protocols; chemical storage, labeling and packing; and how to respond to possible incidents such as fires and spills. Classroom instruction will take place during the first three days before attendees practice using real safety equipment and handling and preparing materials for transport.
CAPCOG has twenty-five seats available for the course, which was requested by several jurisdictions. Attendance will be limited to those agencies which operate a permanent household hazardous waste facility. Entities seeking the training should contact Ken May about registering.
