The Striking a Balance: Family Caregivers Conference will celebrate its 20th anniversary by again bringing family caregivers national and local resources that strengthen their ability to provide care for their loved ones and self, including a keynote speech from The Daytripper’s Chet Garner on finding respite by visiting our local communities and the importance doing so with family or support networks. The conference will include three days of webinars at 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. August 17 through August 19 and an in-person keynote event and resource fair from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. August 21 at the Norris Conference Center, 2525 W Anderson Lane #365 in Austin.
“The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area (AAACAP) is proud to host this conference year after year for our family caregivers with the help of AGE of Central,” said Patty Bordie, AAACAP director — AAACAP is a division of CAPCOG. “Garner will be a great addition to this year’s conference and will share how families can seek quality respite together throughout the Hill Country. This conference started with 50 attendees in a hospital basement and has grown to nearly 200 caregivers with many wishing they had discovered our resources earlier.”
Garner is the creator, host and executive producer and writer of The Daytripper, a five-time Emmy-award-winning program on PBS. He was born and raised in Texas, loves storytelling, and seeks to inspire people about day tripping and finding their passions in life. Other national and local speakers will lead the webinars. Two webinars will take place each day and include topics such as caregiving and self-care, tools for dementia caregiving, activities for caregivers and older adults, and long-term care.
