The Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area and Travis County EngAGE are partnering to house a 5-day workshop to train leaders for two evidence-based intervention courses for older adults.
The training will instruct course leaders how to administer the Self-Management Resource Center’s Chronic Disease Self-Management and Chronic Pain Self-Management workshops and will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. December 6, 7, 13, 14 and 15. The chronic disease workshop helps older adults to:
- Manage Symptoms
- Incorporate Exercise
- Monitor Nutrition
- Talk with Your Doctor
- Make Informed Treatment Decisions
- Deal with Emotions
- Control Stress
The chronic pain course helps to teach older adults:
- Techniques to deal with frustration, fatigue, pain & isolation
- Easy exercises & nutrition for maintaining & improving strength, flexibility & endurance
- Appropriate use of medications
- Pacing activity & rest
- Effective communication with loved ones & health professionals
Leaders run sections of the workshops once to twice a week for several weeks with a small group of older adults. The leadership courses will be held at Travis County Health and Human Services, 5325 Airport Boulevard in Austin.
